websites by some search engines. As a result the affected site may not
receive good rankings for its most important keywords and keyword
phrases. The effect is most pronounced during the initial period of a
site's existence. The Sandbox is designed to act as a de facto
probation period for new websites in an effort to discourage spam
sites from gaining popularity quickly.
The term Sandbox effect came into being because of some SEO findings
regarding the much debated restriction that Google's search engine
places on new websites to prevent them from ranking "well" in its
search results for a certain amount of time. This time supposedly
allows Google to determine whether a site is trustworthy and
legitimate or merely spam. This was named as the "Google Aging Delay"
or the "Google Sandbox effect".
A website said to be in the sandbox may have many strong incoming
links and lots of unique and useful content, but will still falter in
the rankings during the search process. It has been speculated that
some websites are just plain lucky to avoid the "Sandbox" effect. How
Google targets only the spam generating fly-by-night websites is not
know for certain. Many SEO practitioners are not in total agreement
concerning the existence or the extent of the Sandbox effect as a
separate filter from the other alleged Google filters.
The Google "Sandbox" effect is more recognized or accepted among the
SEO community than the similar effect applied to the sites in the
Yahoo! or MSN Live index, although it has been observed that other
search engines are also placing a "waiting" period on inbound links
prior to incorporating them into search results.
