Building "Negative Keywords" into the meta tags

Does anyone know how to build negative keywords into the meta tags?

This week, my site raised in impressions for the keyword "appliance."
This is a problem, because my site doesn't sell or repair appliances.
I'd like to be able to include a meta tag that tells search engines
not to list my site in the natural results if the word "appliance"
appears in the search.

Some people may think that this is not a problem, because traffic is
exposure, and all exposure is good. However, I also don't want to
waste people's time and I don't want to increase my bounce rate. If I
can use negative keywords in the meta tags, then I might be able to
proactively withdrawl myself from the searches of those people who are
not looking for my products and thus improve my level of service to
the internet community.

So, this brings us back to the question: How do I do it? How can I
add negative keywords to my header so that search engines will
recognize them?

rel=nofollow vs. robot.txt's content=nofollow

it has been determined that rel=nofollow (when used internally) can
actually 'evaporate pagerank' ([URL="http://www.bruceclay.com/
newsletter/volume69/nofollowtactics.html
"]reference bruceclay.com[/
URL]) They basically say that if a page is PR10 with 10 links, and 5
of them are rel=nofollow, that still only 1 point of pagerank is
passed to the 5 "do follow" links (instead of 10/5=2 points).

My question is - does anyone know if using the content=nofollow tag in
the robots.txt file does the same thing?

does duplicate content hurt SEO & google ranking?

I'm confused by out of date information and I feel like it's a yes or
no answer- if I write an article and I post it on my blog and then
10-20 other people love what I say so much and cut and paste - does
that hurt my own rankings? Forget about copy right issues here - just
the SEO?

Does the answer change if they say "this information was originally
written by XXX" but never links to my site?

Request to remove site from Googles Search Engine

Hi, thank you Google for providing this Webmaster's page for
discussions.
I have searched a name Conrado T. Dieza, Jr. and stumbled on a certain
web site http://salidumay.com/u/32 . This is with regard to the
comment posted by a certain Juan dated February 21, 2010 @ 1:04pm
which comes 1st in rank when searching in google for the said subject
or name.

May I request that Google remove the site from its search engine, or
to demand from Salidumay.com deletion of said negative post. I hope
this is posible since I know Google does not encourage destructive,
foul, and Morally damaging discussions sites especially if it is
BASELESS and FALSE.

Obviously, such comment had been posted by an embittered individual
who wishes to ruin Mr. Dieza, Jr's rather good Public image here in
the Philippines. The blogger is irresponsible and is taking advantage
of the site to freely air his ill personality. The remark is not even
supported by other bloggers.
The site www.salidumay.com did not provide details and contact
information on its site that i cannot send my request to them.

Please respond to this plead as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Re: Changing URL's from Underscores to Dashes

Are your pages "real" pages (ie distinct files) or "virtual pages", ie pages generated "on the fly) by your cms program?

If "real" pages, this is almost easy:
1 - Use some command lin utilities to do a batch rename of all the files
2 - That's just ONE side of the story: you now need to make on your site any change so that the site links to dashed-pages instead of underscore_files
3 - But now you have a referencement problem, since robots have refernced _ rather than -
This one is "easy" to solve: use a 301 redirect in htaccess

If you are using virtual pages, this now becomes
1- Is now easy, just some parameter to adjust
2,3  - should be easy too

We have several pages that use underscores to separate words in the
URL.  We have read that dashes are better than underscores in URL's
because Google recognizes words separately that have dashes between
them... where on the other hand, Google combines words that have
underscores between them.

My question is this... we want better SEO of course... so what is the
best way to change the pages that have underscores in the URL to
dashes in the URL?  There could be several pages.

Re: Hit me with your ideas... Amatuer attempt at website...

Hello Eliza,
I notice that you do not use the word "landscaping" in conjunction
with garden. Just wondering why that is? I did some preliminary
keyword research and "garden landscaping" received 368,000 searches in
the UK in the previous month. Have you done any keyword research?
Google has a great free Keyword Tool that lets you search out your
keywords and gives ideas on other relevant keywords you may not have
thought of.

Do a search for "Google keyword tool free" and find the Google UK free
tool.

Re: How to chose file names for pages and images?

Problem is to avoid what might be interpreted as "keyword stuffing".

General idea to remeber there is, as usual,
"When in doubt, build for human visitors, not for spiders"

As a human visitor, you would probably be fine with 2-4 keywords but would run away of a 10-keywords filename, right?
There is probably a certain value for which indexing programs consider that this is spam... no idea which value, so I'm just using my own feeling of a reasonable use. I would not think there is such a wide difference between 2 and 4

There are I think several different aspects:
1 - the picture by itself, as it would be found by image search
2 - the picture by itself, as it would improve regular (text) search
3 - the picture "text" (filename, alt text, etc) as it would improve the rank of the page it is part of.

For 1/ certainly relevant keywords, whichever a (reasonable!) number certainly improves the chance of the image to be found in an image search. NOTE thet this is specially important for photos of persons, if their name is part of the filename then certainly these pictures will get high marks.

For 3/ I would think that again a reasonable use of keywords would favor the relevance of the page for these keywords...

Item 2/ is probably a more fuzzy area, since there is (yet) no clear common experience on how/ when /why pictures do appear in search results. What is certain though is that:
- if images are returned in the answer page, all results returned after this mini gallery are pushed down, and some of the results will trhen move below the "fold line"
- if yours are part of the images published in the gallery, this is a rank booster, even if your page is displayed lots farther
- and of course, if you make a "full" (some images of yours in the gallery + your page above the fold), you are king.

PS NOTE: when I write "When in doubt, build for human visitors, not for spiders", this needs a slight adaptation: never use "javascript-only" or "flash-only" navigation/ content, since these are not really spider-readable. If for the look you want to use them, be sure to provide an additional "regular html" alternative.

hi Bernard,
sometimes i consider the option to insert related / synonim and typos in keywords. But i think you have covered all the necessary topics on file naming!
But i have red here and there that's much better not to create long filenames, so it could happen that 3-4 kw in filename is too much. Have you seen any ranking difference using a 4-word filnename instead of a 2-kw filename?
infati too many keywords filenames could decrease the total amount of relevance of the filename... what's you opinion on that?

How to choose page names with blogs and CMSes?

Question: most of blogs and CMS programes allow you to have "smart URLs" for pages. What have you selected?

Most content management systems, whether they are real CMS or blogs or event e-commerece site (eg, Magento) allow some sort of "smart url" system for pages, which is in fact a twofold process:
  1. create and display the smart url of each page
  2. when someone comes to the server with a smart url, deliver the expected content

Of course these 2 points are interdependent.
Item 2 is usually achieved by combining some url-rewrite magic to the cms
Item 1 is usually selected out of several options, the most common ones being
  1. post number: this is usually the default page address, just numbers. It is a safe way, because this will work in most situations, even if url rewrite fails. If possible, it is wise to select post number + keyword combination, you can just anticipate some fall back mechanism in case the keywords have changed
  2. automatic url regeneration: this is a trap, and Drupal is very "good" at it: if you change some words in the title of he page, then the smart URL is changed and it means that all bookmarks to the previous address will fail (except of course if you have a fallback mechanism as hinted above). Best compromise, if possible, is to have some way to change/ edit the url generated and to protect it from change (Very easy with SPIP if you have the right add-on)
  3. (not that common) list of "noisy words" that should be dropped from URLs: if your program has this option, then you can be almost sure to throw away almost all "noise" (Drupal has this)
  4. minimum length of a word used in a smart url: my preference is to throw away words of 1 or 2 letters, and keeping 3 or more; there are lots of "noisy" 3 letters words... but there are also lots of significant , so this is my preference... but note that if you have the "list of noisy words" option you can probably take that to 2 letters instead of 3
  5. separator: usual options are minus/dash "-", underscore "_" or comma",". My own preference: keep as far away as possible from comma (but programs like SPIP use it), and I have a long lasting preference for minus/dash
  6. maximum length of the generated URL: you can usually select the max number of words in the smart URL and/ or the max number of chars: note that you will then need a mechanism to make distinct URLs for pages with the same main words in the title
  7. how to handle special or accented characters and punctuation: this is a common trap if your writing language is not English, because all these people with English as a mother tongue do not even think this might be a problem, and so thay have put in place regular expressions which throw away everything which is not in the a-z A-Z 0-9 space... and so all the accented characters are simply dropped. So you need to work with your own function that will convert accented chars to their non-accented char, ie éêè all being translated to e. Blogspot/ blogger is the "best" example of such a poor design, where designers have thought and built in a purely US-centric way, assuming that problems that foreign people would face with accented characters are insignificant... for my own blogs on blogspot I have used the strategy of creating the initial post with non-accented chars, then when the smart-url has been generated I often place back the correct accented chars. Works fine with blogger / blogspot since URLs are not recalculated (see item 2 above), would not work otherwise
What is your own experience on this? how do you manage? which poblems have you met?

How to chose file names for pages and images?

Discussion item 1:

Question: How to chose file names for pages and images to improve SEO as much as possible?

Most of us have some ideas there, or rather should.

My own strategy there is verry simple:
- index.* files must stay named that way unless you want to play with Apache configuration and htaccess
- for other pages: if they are manually created pages (as opposed to dynamically generated), use
  • lower-case only, no accent or spoecial characters
  • keywords separated by hyphens/ minus "-" (some would prefer to use underscores "_ ", I don't)
  • more than 3-4 keywords is probably a waste
- same for pages structures and directories
- if possible, do the same for relevant images / pictures: not thos used for decoragion and style, but thos used to illustrate a post and add information: naming the pictures files with dashed-keywords is an important tool since it will help tour SEO on several fronts:
  • for images alone, your keyworded images will score high on any image-search with these keywords
  • on regular Google searches, chances are high that your images will score high too and them give you some additional exposure will pushing down competitors.
What is YOUR strategy for these?

All of us are currently making a scary useless place of this list, by not really adding value, and thus bringing in few interested / interesting people.

Re: Google Adsense report.

you might try a different tactic. I did not test it so cannot be sure it works:
- create a blog with Google on blogger.com / blogspot.com
- wtite o,ne post a day for 10 days
- then submit your blog to adsense using the "monetize" tab in blogger.com

Hi,

If you have blog it should be live for atleast 6 months. In case of site it should be atleast in one year to get the google ads. So, please check the domain age and try it.

Re: Google Adsense report.

I really like your website in terms of design and layout. Just the problem I found it has too little content...

Just create a small website ( or blog) make some great content page and re-apply. I hope you will be approved.

Anyway, your designing hand is really awesome.

Hi, My name is Joseph and i have a blog, i have been recieving a

first ended up in the spam box but actually seem to be genuine and the
person who has added the comments seems to have read the content of my
post before adding the comment (i have no idea if these comments have
been posted by some black hat backlink software )so i have marked them
as none spam and then approved the favourable comments. The majority
of the comments have come from other blogers who are obviously
attracted to backlinking to my site which as far as i am aware is
fine, i am also under the (may nieve) impression that comments are
counted as possitive votes.

I have noticed that i have dropped considerably in the page rank in
google for my previously successful key words which is rather
perplexing as i have not done any considerable work to gain backlinks
to my site. Basically  with a few links to ezine articles and some web
2.0 sites my site rose well in about 3 months, i have however recently
added a very few comments onto some of the related sites that had
added comments onto mine.

I am concerned that if i have in advertently been dragged down due to
the low rank of the sites i have linked to or/and are linked to mine,
if this may be the case are there any tools available that i can
quickly check the rank and status of the sites linking in bound and
those i am interested to backlink to so as to not detrimentally
effect my own page status.

Just to finish i want to add that 90% of my posts have been written by
myself, only a couple i have added from other sites (with their
backlink and permission) that seemed to add value to my readers.

Thank you for your time.

Kind Regards.

Thank you all!

What all this tells us is that:
- we must unconditionally focus on content and the comfort of human visitors
- AND after that check that robots will find their way (= be sure that we have no "javascript-only" or "flash-only" link)
- AND that indexers find useful stuff to be retrieved: significant and relevant keywords in text, filenames, etc.

Doing this core stuff ensures that, even if search engines change their algorithms, your pages are still considered relevant

Working on extreme optimzation close to the black hat area allows some short term victories, but might send you very deep at the next algorithm change

THIS IS THE PURPOSE OF THESE CHANGES, pushing far away pages with tricks which give a (temporary) good ranking WITHOUT a good relevance.

Hi,
This is an excerpt from WebProNews. This article gives possible explanations to the troubles of lots of online businesses. Google is constantly changing their algorithims, so it can affect keywords and all kinds of other factors of a business. This is just one explanation. Perhaps you might consider refreshing your keywords. I'm just relatively new to the business of online marketing myself so I'm certainly no guru. You are at least getting traffic, I on the other hand am not at this time. I have a lot more to do before I see any real results. Subscribe to WebPronews. They have a lot of good information that covers a wide variety of topics of interest. Lots of good knowledge base from informed people in all areas of business. Try different forums to get help. I'm sorry I can't help you more but I am just a beginner with a long way to go myself. Below is the excerpt that I was talking about. I highlighted the beginning with bold.

High rankings in Google search results are coveted by nearly all webmasters, but Google is constantly making changes to keep them on their toes. Actually, Google is said to make roughly one change per day.

One recent change in particular, however, has gotten some webmasters riled up. It's being referred to as "Mayday," and some claim it is costing them money.

Do you think the update has affected your revenue? Comment here.

Ex-Googler Vanessa Fox, who spoke on a panel with current Googler Matt Cutts at Google I/O last week, quotes Cutts as saying, "this is an algorithmic change in Google, looking for higher quality sites to surface for long tail queries. It went through vigorous testing and isn't going to be rolled back."

She also says Google told her that it was a rankings change, as opposed to a crawling/indexing change. This, she says, "seems to imply that sites getting less traffic still have their pages indexed, but some of those pages are no longer ranking as highly as before."

Vanessa Fox"This change seems to have primarily impacted very large sites with 'item' pages that don't have many individual links into them, might be several clicks from the home page, and may not have substantial unique and value-added content on them," says Fox. "For instance, ecommerce sites often have this structure. The individual product pages are unlikely to attract external links and the majority of the content may be imported from a manufacturer database. Of course, as with any change that results in a traffic hit for some sites, other sites experience the opposite."

She has more to say about it at Search Engine Land, offering some of her own speculation. One reader accuses the change of delivering "a real blow" to his revenue.

This is not the first we've heard about "Mayday". There's been discussion about it around the SEO community all month, but this is the first we've seen it really addressed by Google.

Most savvy webmasters have learned by now that they can't rely on Google rankings alone to drive traffic. This is why social media opportunities presented by networks like Facebook and Twitter have become so attractive. The way people search and obtain information is becoming more and more diversified, not only spread out around different applications (largely due to increased mobile usage), but also within search engines themselves.

For example, Google recently rolled out its big SERP redesign, which gives users a great deal more options for filtering their results (or at least puts these options in the spotlight). The importance of ranking in a completely natural, organic search has become greatly diluted over time. Don't get me wrong, it's still nice, but it's getting harder to rely on as well as less critical for discovery.

Stay tuned to WebProNews for our exclusive interviews with both Cutts and Fox from Google I/O, in which they talk with our own Abby Johnson about a variety of search-related topics. They should be posted soon.
