Re: Alexa Ranks

Varon,

It happens quite often. Alexa is only a crude measurement and it is filled with flaws that will result in ridiculous numbers on occasion.

Best,
Jay Bale

Same company listed multiple times for Keyword.

I am working for a client "heat transfer paper" is his biggest keyword combo.  The recent changes to google now result in his main competitors site being listed for the top 4 results.  Is this what google intended to do with their update to search...seems kind of illogical.

Lost 301 Redirect file and placement has dropped significantly

We completely revamped our site last year and had a lot of quality inbound links to the old site which we managed through 301 redirects.  Unfortunately recently an update to the wordpress blog I have attached to the site, wiped out my 301 redirect file.

I saw my rankings drop gradually over the month (was previously in 3rd, 4th, or 5th position for key terms like "Toronto Team Building" and I'm now down to the bottom of page one or top of page 2,  I couldn't figure out what was going on.  I finally figured it out after a month and re-instated the 301 redirects.  Is there any way to regain my previous level or credibility or do I need to wait for the cycle to go through and find the links again?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Lynn

Migrating a section to a new domain

I have www.SiteA.com which contains a number of sections of content, a section of which (i.e. www.SiteA.com/sectionA), we would like to move to a new domain www.SiteB.com

Definitely we will ensure that a redirect strategy is in place and that we submit a sitemap for SiteB

Two Questions

1. Since we are only moving part of SiteA to SiteB, is there another way of telling Google that we changed address for that section or are the 301s enough?

2. Currently, Section A  (under SiteA) contains a subsection where we were posting an article a day. In the new site (SiteB), we decided to drop this subsection and write content (but not "exactly" the same content) under a new section. During migration, how should we handle the subsection that we have decided to stop writing?

Should we:

A. Import the content into SiteB and call it archives and then redirect all the urls from subsection under SiteA to the archives under SiteB?

OR

B. Do not move the content but redirect all the pages (365 in total) to where we think the user would be more interested in going to on SiteB?

Note: A colleague of mine is worried that since the subsection has good content he thinks its necessary to actually move the content to SiteB. But again, looking at the views for the archives it caters for 1% of the the total views of this section. In other words, people only view the article on the day it is written.

I hope I was clear :)

Your help is appreciated

Thank you

merge my blog with portfolio site?

I'm a freelance photographer. My main site has my portfolio and bio. I also have a photo blog. I'm thinking it would probably help with SEO if the blog is part of my main site. The blog is updated much more frequently than the portfolio site, and there is a lot more text and other information. The main downside I see, is that my blog--which I've been regularly posting to for several years--will have dead links. It's not good form to have duplicate content on two sites, right?

I'd appreciate hearing any advice about this. Particularly whether this is a good idea or not (again, mainly thinking of SEO), but also what to do about dead links to the blog if I merge the two sites, and anything else that comes to mind. Thanks!

My specific issue: I can't find where to upload banner for my business places listing. I easily found it for my personal G+ page, and although I can upload photos to my G+ business page, I don't see where I can upload the banner (currently it shows the Google map). At this moment its working with 302 redirections like this:

https://www.domain.com >> 302 >> https://www.domain.com/de/germankeyword
https://www.domain.com >> 302 >> https://www.domain.com/en/englishkeyword
...

I know that for SEO its better to redirect using 301 codes instead of 302, becasue if not, no juice will be forwarded to the new url.

So I just changed it to 301, but my question is, how will google index the website, which one will they index, and which one will get the juice?

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot.

Re: Multiple Domain Name and Duplicate Content..

If I understand right ... I would use sub domains if you will give the other people access so ur domain won't get a penalty  or domain.com/cityplusskeyword .... That way is best since you get the strength on the mail site.... Only problem you must manage all so you know that there is no dupe content....... Ya that's right folks...... No duping content!!!!!!

Jays idea is good but expensive

My old friend,

As you suspected, no matter how its sliced, your will be in some long term reoccurring penalty.

Why not at the very least  have ABCDEF Geo target each individual site?

Even with 900 sites it's not that big a issue to create some individuals home page text. looks like you have some value here, so you may want to invest further in your work.

I have seen your kind words in this forum for many years and have seen you as a real qualified SEO based on what you ask etc..
Sometimes that little bit more is worth so much more.  Not only will you increase access at a local level  but as things grow you can integrate a service to allow each dealer in a area to expand their site and be able to attach paid marketing platforms to the accounts individually.

You are creating a porthole that all the rising stars can come back to for expansion. If you do not do it this way, the stars that will rise up and do the big dollars, will move to independent platforms, that may not benefit you in the best way, or the group as a whole. You owning the domains will help incredibly, not to mention you will have control over linking and policy.

If you work your 900 plus clients and encourage localized growth, everyone wins.

Suggested GEO targeted URL :

That will give some chance of The Purchased URL showing up locally even with all that duplicate content included. You will get enough points to get you some SERPS organically, simply because lack of local competition may prevail and allow a very low scoring site access to some good keywords.

Social media will attach nicely to this type of structure too, and at a local level may help.

Hi all Gurus!

I have an issue to discuss for a client of mine..

Case -
Client is abcdef.com and is into online tuition and coaching.. And provides franchising for x amount and then the franchise gets the study package and other details thru ERP along with a website option for a local franchise to just put some details like About Us and Contact us page and also suggest a domain name which abcdef will buy and then upload a template based themed design CMS site on that domain where apart from About us and Contact us content everything remains same as the main group website.. Which includes, Methodology, Courses, Learning Center, tips and Tricks, etc.. There are almost 900+sites like this and is growing @ 25-30/month..

So my questions are:

1: does this affects SEO because of duplicated content? Or there is an option to tell Google that its a part of group website and content is taken from here..

2: should we switch to /folder or .domain name structure instead of different domain name for all franchise?

3: How to do Social Media (fb) for franchise, what is the right approach, individual pages of all franchise or one company page only?

4: is there any other way or suggestion?

Appreciate your efforts..

Thanks,
SMR..

I had this site under domain www.example.com.

I then moved the site to a new domain, lets call it www.newdomain.com

I followed the standard procedures, notified google via web master tools and put a 301 redirect from the old domain to the new.

Everything worked fine, except that the sites pages now have funny titles in the search results.

The topdomain is fine, it says someting like:
Newdomain.com | My slogan

But for all the other pages the title is:
PageName | newdomain.com - example.com

The old domain is added at the end!

If I look at the title on the actual page it just says PageName | newdomain.com

And the bisarre thing is that the old domain is nowhere on the site except for in the name of my disqus shread, so I can't understand wgy google adds in to the search result title.

All the page titles are constrcuted with a php script, maybe it's this script that's giving me problems?

All help much appreciated!

Re: Google showing old domain in title of search results

yeah its true what you guess is right .. please check the PHP script in title tag .. and also check whether you are using template or include files ?

is your meta tags are dynamic ? .. Or you may be using CMS ..

Re: Google showing old domain in title of search results

Hello Sir,

I hope, After some time Google would not display old site's name in the title of internal pages...Just double check your new website....if your internal pages will have old site's name in title!

Cheers!

Re: Multiple Domain Name and Duplicate Content..

Suggested GEO targeted URL :

abcdefTempeArizona.com

That will give some chance of The Purchased URL showing up locally even with all that duplicate content included. You will get enough points to get you some SERPS organically, simply because lack of local competition may prevail and allow a very low scoring site access to some good keywords.

Social media will attach nicely to this type of structure too, and at a local level may help.

Best,
Jay Bale

4: is there any other way or suggestion?

Appreciate your efforts..

Best SEO friendly way to redirect a website with multilanguage support?

Hi,

I'm delaing with a website which at this momment is redirecting to many urls regarding on the client's user agent language.

At this moment its working with 302 redirections like this:

https://www.domain.com >> 302 >> https://www.domain.com/de/germankeyword
https://www.domain.com >> 302 >> https://www.domain.com/en/englishkeyword
...

I know that for SEO its better to redirect using 301 codes instead of 302, becasue if not, no juice will be forwarded to the new url.

So I just changed it to 301, but my question is, how will google index the website, which one will they index, and which one will get the juice?

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot.

Multiple Domain Name and Duplicate Content..

Re: Why does Google allow Pissed Consumer to rank so high

You answered the question perfectly. You are correct in all assumptions in my book. I do however believe Google will take care of the issue very soon. Penguin 2.0 may be the answer.

It gets much worse if I may so.

Image someone you cant identify makes a huge site about how bad your company sucks, then goes and gets it to climb in the organic serps under your business name. A few months later, the site is magically for sale, and the company being extorted is the only one that has a interest in the site. Pure extortion 100%. If Google does not a get a handle on this it may spiral even worse and very soon.

Private email me to see this extortion I speak of  - I don't want too much attention going to it.

I'm glad to see some raving about this, it's about time.

Why does Google allow PissedConsumer.com to rank so highly? Clearly this is an extortion site. Once your in their sites their PissedConsumer review turns up on page 1 Google and the only way to deal with it is to pay PissedConsumer.com a monthly fee to manage your bad reviews. http://www.pissedconsumer.com/business-solutions.html This is in sane!

While doing some homework attempting to figure out how they get away with this I found this detailed summary on how PissedConsumer.com is scamming and spamming the search engines to get high ranking. Have look at this article here: http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/pissedconsumer-link-farm-dominating-google-serps

For those not tech savvy here is what they are doing in a nut shell:
  • Google ranks sites (page 1 verses page 2) based on the relevance of inbound links.
  • Pissed Consumer bought lots of other websites (RipOffReport is one of hundreds) and places links from RipOffReport to PissedConsumer
  • Google sees these links and thinks RipOff is relevant to a Pissed Off Consumer - so they give them ranking credit. (highly simplified, but you understand)
  • PissedConsumer then charges the business mentioned in their PissedConsumer report to help manage their poor reputation for a monthly fee. Think I'm kidding? Have a look for yourself: http://www.pissedconsumer.com/business-solutions.html

Think of the thousands of large companies paying PissedConsumer $250/month to "manage" their consumer comments? Can you say extortion?

Pissed Consumer = Web Extortion - it is that simple.

I think ever business in America should block Google on their firewall until they get their act together on this one.

English keyword to local google (Vietnam)

Hi,
I have built many backlinks to promote 2 keywords on my site. One is "cau truc", another is "crane".
Two words are the same in each language.
But only "cau truc" is on top 3 at google.com.vn.
The "crane" is not top 100 at google.com.vn.

Please guide me more if I do something wrong.

My site: http://www.megastarenc.com.vn

New information from Matt Cutts on SEO

Less than an hour ago MC released a new vid outlining Google's intended changes in SEO.

Next gen of Penguin (V2.0) targets black hat webspam with more comprehensive link evaluations.. deeper impact. Link spammers less likely to show up.

Ads should not flow PR and it should be obvious that ads are ads.

More sophisticated link analysis - Spam links less effective.

Next generation hacked site detection, additional webmaster tools for hacked sites.

Authority sites will rank better. (Looks like PR is again in the SEO mix)

Softening Panda factors for borderline sites.

Decreased clustering on page 1 of results.
Fewer results after a cluster is found.
