Requesting some opinions about why google doesn't like our site

Hello,

Our webiste www.forsalebyowner.com.au ranks for the keyphrase "For Sale By owner' and nothing else. No other keywords, no variations of this - absolutely nothing.

Last year e had some sort of negative SEO campaign done against us, without 300,000 backlinks created with keywords "Sell My House". We dropped out of Google at that time. Since then most of these links have disappeared, and we also added a lot of them to our disavow file.

Basically, if I copy and paste unique text from our website into Google, we come up last if we come up at all. If I search for keyphrases relating to our services or website, flower shops in Portugal come up on 70, but we are nowhere to be found.

We are not ranking for anything at all, apart from main keyphrase mentioned.

Since we have no manual penalty, I thought maybe we had baad coding which was leading to an algorithmic penalty, but can't find any problems.

Would be extremely grateful if any has any suggestions as to why we are performing so badly, and essentially have no organic presence whatsoever.

Thanks in advance!

My site is: http://itcafe.vn
I tried to submit many times on dmoz.org, but it's didn't appear! Please show me how

I have this registration form on the homepage of my website. In this form is a huge list with cities that are now being indexed. If I fetch my site as Google Bot (in Webmaster tools) the majority of my site seems to be about the cities.

Is there any way of preventing this dropdown from being indexed? It's not very relevant for my website.

Note: I do not seem to suffer on this when I search on the keywords I want to be found on, but I just wanted to know

Re: Looks like a google penalty but no reason given

They moderators filter anything negative about Google's Brand because they are in damage control... If they approved every message people would see the unbelievable outrage in the SEO community. Google is shameless. They are destroying rankings based on backlink profiles. I could destroy anyones ranking with little effort by deploying bad backlinks to their website. Google does not care. They want their CPC to go up. Instead of doing what is right (auto disavow or do not give any credit to nonsense back links) they PENALIZE websites for it. There are thousands of SEO experts that see Google for what they are now. A monopoly that is capitalizing on destroying rankings to stuff their pockets through PPC. If they think no one notices, they are sadly mistaken. Businesses are far better off doing other marketing and not relying so heavily on Google. Google's reputation has been severely damaged.

but for a week now it's went directly to the second page!

I didn't touch the website for more than a year (I don't really need to change it, as it's only give free service to people who enter)
In my Webmaster Tools it tells me that my website is having "Big traffic change for top URL" , but no message or e-mail was given of any penalty what so ever.

Yes, I've heard that google changed something in their algorithm a week ago but the current situation doesn't even make sense to me,
websites ranked way below me went to be first results while I got to the second page, I was the 4th or 5th result for search term "online alarm clock" for years,
and now I got way below while one of the new top sites doesn't even have a homepage (I got a 404 page) and another is a just a flash (.flv) file - as I said, I'm really novice to SEO but this really doesn't make sense to me.

I'm really frustrated. I hope someone can help me.

Thank you

google fragment crowl penalization

Hi there.

We are now making our ajax page google crowlable via fragment hash. Will google penalize our site, if we optimize output for fragment crowl? We have a lot of inline scripts and css classes (bootstrap classes are really long named) that are unnecessary and not "data" depending. The second reason is, that now all design is builded on client side, and we must do the same render on server side now, and it can be a little difficult to have similar output. AFAIK google penalize some hacks and whitecollar techniques, when developers make different page for google and everybody else, so I just want to be clear.

new script --> new urls --> what to do with 301

Hello,

I recently installed a new script on a domain i run. Together with this script comes a lot of new media/material.
The old script i have been using for 6 years had this url structure --> http://www.domain.com/entry/19067/title-of-entry
The new script will be using this --> http://www.domain.com/video/title-of-entry-(randomIdNumber).html

The "problem" is that the new script will have a bunch of random id numbers, probably different then the old script.

To be clear, all old material related to the old script will be deleted.
To stick with the example i provided. When i would 301 this http://www.domain.com/entry/19067/title-of-entry   to  http://www.domain.com/video/title-of-entry-19067.html there are 2 things that can happen.

there is no such id (19067) or there is such an id but with different material then what it was before (so also a new title, description etc)

I think its a pain in the ass to configure this properly so i'm gonna ask you guys/girls if its allowed to just 301 ALL URLS FROM OLD SCRIPT to be redirected to homepage.

cheers!

We then decided to have more specific titles, no keyword stuffing, but just using one or two keywords very specific for each page. A moth later those websites were no longer on the first page. We lost 30% of page visits.

Also, we completely removed the meta keywords tags, but I don't believe that would make any difference.

I hope someone can give me any hints.

On Thu, Oct 31, 2013 at 2:53 PM, Google Expert Michael Wilson <mikewilsonseo@gmail.com> wrote:

Hummingbird

Google has a new search algorithm, the system it uses to sort through all the information it has when you search and come back with answers. It's called "Hummingbird" and below, what we know about it so far.

What's a "search algorithm?"

That's a technical term for what you can think of as a recipe that Google uses to sort through the billions of web pages and other information it has, in order to return what it believes are the best answers.

What's "Hummingbird?"

It's the name of the new search algorithm that Google is using, one that Google says should return better results.

So that "PageRank" algorithm is dead?

No. PageRank is one of over 200 major "ingredients" that go into the Hummingbird recipe. Hummingbird looks at PageRank — how important links to a page are deemed to be — along with other factors like whether Google believes a page is of good quality, the words used on it and many other things (see our Periodic Table Of SEO Success Factors for a better sense of some of these).

Why is it called Hummingbird?

Google told us the name come from being "precise and fast."

When did Hummingbird start? Today?

Google started using Hummingbird about a month ago, it said. Google only announced the change today.

What does it mean that Hummingbird is now being used?

Think of a car built in the 1950s. It might have a great engine, but it might also be an engine that lacks things like fuel injection or be unable to use unleaded fuel. When Google switched to Hummingbird, it's as if it dropped the old engine out of a car and put in a new one. It also did this so quickly that no one really noticed the switch.

When's the last time Google replaced its algorithm this way?

Google struggled to recall when any type of major change like this last happened. In 2010, the "Caffeine Update" was a huge change. But that was also a change mostly meant to help Google better gather information (indexing) rather than sorting through the information. Google search chief Amit Singhal told me that perhaps 2001, when he first joined the company, was the last time the algorithm was so dramatically rewritten.

What about all these Penguin, Panda and other "updates" — haven't those been changes to the algorithm?

Panda, Penguin and other updates were changes to parts of the old algorithm, but not an entire replacement of the whole. Think of it again like an engine. Those things were as if the engine received a new oil filter or had an improved pump put in. Hummingbird is a brand new engine, though it continues to use some of the same parts of the old, like Penguin and Panda

The new engine is using old parts?

Yes. And no. Some of the parts are perfectly good, so there was no reason to toss them out. Other parts are constantly being replaced. In general, Hummingbird — Google says — is a new engine built on both existing and new parts, organized in a way to especially serve the search demands of today, rather than one created for the needs of ten years ago, with the technologies back then.

What type of "new" search activity does Hummingbird help?

"Conversational search" is one of the biggest examples Google gave. People, when speaking searches, may find it more useful to have a conversation.

"What's the closest place to buy the iPhone 5s to my home?" A traditional search engine might focus on finding matches for words — finding a page that says "buy" and "iPhone 5s," for example.

Hummingbird should better focus on the meaning behind the words. It may better understand the actual location of your home, if you've shared that with Google. It might understand that "place" means you want a brick-and-mortar store. It might get that "iPhone 5s" is a particular type of electronic device carried by certain stores. Knowing all these meanings may help Google go beyond just finding pages with matching words.

In particular, Google said that Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query, ensuring that the whole query — the whole sentence or conversation or meaning — is taken into account, rather than particular words. The goal is that pages matching the meaning do better, rather than pages matching just a few words.

I thought Google did this conversational search stuff already!

It does (see Google's Impressive "Conversational Search" Goes Live On Chrome), but it had only been doing it really within its Knowledge Graph answers. Hummingbird is designed to apply the meaning technology to billions of pages from across the web, in addition to Knowledge Graph facts, which may bring back better results.

Does it really work? Any before-and-afters?

We don't know. There's no way to do a "before-and-after" ourselves, now. Pretty much, we only have Google's word that Hummingbird is improving things. However, Google did offer some before-and-after examples of its own, that it says shows Hummingbird improvements.

A search for "acid reflux prescription" used to list a lot of drugs (such as this, Google said), which might not be necessarily be the best way to treat the disease. Now, Google says results have information about treatment in general, including whether you even need drugs, such as this as one of the listings.

A search for "pay your bills through citizens bank and trust bank" used to bring up the home page for Citizens Bank but now should return the specific page about paying bills

A search for "pizza hut calories per slice" used to list an answer like this, Google said, but not one from Pizza Hut. Now, it lists this answer directly from Pizza Hut itself, Google says.

Could it be making Google worse?

Almost certainly not. While we can't say that Google's gotten better, we do know that Hummingbird — if it has indeed been used for the past month — hasn't sparked any wave of consumers complaining that Google's results suddenly got bad. People complain when things get worse; they generally don't notice when things improve.

Does this mean SEO is dead?

No, SEO is not yet again dead. In fact, Google's saying there's nothing new or different SEOs or publishers need to worry about. Guidance remains the same, it says: have original, high-quality content. Signals that have been important in the past remain important; Hummingbird just allows Google to process them in new and hopefully better ways.

Does this mean I'm going to lose traffic from Google?

If you haven't in the past month, well, you came through Hummingbird unscathed. After all, it went live about a month ago. If you were going to have problems with it, you would have known by now.

By and large, there's been no major outcry among publishers that they've lost rankings. This seems to support Google saying this is very much a query-by-query effect, one that may improve particular searches — particularly complex ones — rather than something that hits "head" terms that can, in turn, cause major traffic shifts.

But I did lose traffic!

Perhaps it was due to Hummingbird, but Google stressed that it could also be due to some of the other parts of its algorithm, which are always being changed, tweaked or improved. There's no way to know.

How do you know all this stuff?

Google shared some of it at its press event today, and then I talked with two of Google's top search execs, Amit Singhal and Ben Gomes, after the event for more details. I also hope to do a more formal look at the changes from those conversations in the near future. But for now, hopefully you've found this quick FAQ based on those conversations to be helpful. Definately penguin based on SEMRush and when your rankings tumbled!

your backlinks arent great quality.

Re: After reducing keyword stuffing in <title>, lost raking on first page.

could be that you were hit with a panda penalty?

have you checked the time of the drop against known updates?

Least that way you'd know the cause.

We had some websites that were on the first page of the results. After reading and watching tons of official google videos and docs, we learned that we were doing too much keyword stuffing in our titles.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Looks like a google penalty but no reason given

We had Panda 2.1 recently which is a content algorithm. Maybe your test needs to be re-written to be more helpful?

Hello,
First I'd like to say that I'm no SEO expert and I have a little knowledge in anything regard it.

My website - http://www.metaclock.com was the 4th result for the search term "online alarm clock" (in any country and language I checked - mostly english) and other keywords
but for a week now it's went directly to the second page!

Thank you

Help me diagnose the penalty

Back in April everything was going fine with my site www.gmt.gb.com - around the 25th tho i lost all of my rankings. I haven't had a notice from Google about anything in webmaster tools and am pretty lost.

Can anyone help diagnose whats happened?

Its been 6 months now and here's what i've done so far without any success:

Backlinks:
  • Downloaded all backlinks using Majestic SEO and manually reviewed each one.
  • Ive contacted websites i think are of low quality asking for removal
  • 6 months later ive re-run the report and disavowed each of the domains that remain.
Onsite:
  • I went through the website and fixed as many of the w3c errors as possible
  • I ran copyscape on every page and re-wrote everything that was highlighted
  • I de-optimised all title tags
  • Ive 301's all dead pages to relevant content
  • ive noindexed and nofollowed all links and the folder containing PDF's
I've even bought Fiverr gigs that help diagnose penalty issues without any recovery.

The only remaining thing i can think of is that the site was moved to a cheaper USA host around the same time - maybe this is a bad host tho i have no way of checking. I also temporarily set the geolocation of the site in webmaster tools to the UK to see if it would improve rankings (its set back to global now).

Can anyone help me out - i'm at my witts end?

I'm in the process of rebuilding the site from scratch using new file names and intend to 302 the old content to see if this will help recover things - but this wont help if the home page has been hit.

Thanks
Mark

Hi Michael, and thanks for the set of tools.

If you are looking to optimize your Local SEO campaign or only to check local rankings by using Local IP addresses, GeoRanker is the platform you shall look into.
