Thanks for your email. Yes some times implimentation of new design may downrank your site. There are several issues which may effect your rank.
1. Make sure your <tittle> is at the top just after <head> tag... so it would look like <head><title> title site </title><other meta></head>.
2. Make sure you use text links as much possible instead of link buttons.
2. <h> tag is the most you may stylize your heading it doesn't harm your rank.
3. use of "title" and "alt" text in your images.
4. Make sure your keywords in your site content is bolded or italized.
5. It is always better to use your most focused keyword number of times without making google angry... so you may go with adding footnote...i.e your keywords in the footer (even better for you to link with your internal page which match your keyword.
