RE: SEO

Hi!

First of all, whenever emailing your queries to the group it would definitely be helpful if you could please also include the link to your site and also mention which type of product you are selling or what your site is related to. This helps us process the site and check for the content or source and see where you are going wrong.

Okay, now to answer the queries that you have raised only based on what you have provided.

1.       An SEO technique is considered White Hat if it conforms to the search engines' guidelines and involves no deception. But this does not mean that what you are doing is going to help you in getting the volume for you to promote your site to a greater extent and to reach more people.

2.       Having a lot of back-links does help the site come up in the ranking, but Google is slowly changing its algorithm by which it characterizes a site as a good one or a bad one. You should also consider promoting your site by way of writing comments on other like-minded sites which allow for commenting and also consider link-exchanges.

3.       Meta Tags and Meta Keywords - as per Google “At least for Google's web search results currently (September 2009), the answer is no. Google doesn't use the "keywords" meta tag in our web search ranking.” So although it is useful for other search engines to use this, Google, as of now, does not follow this. The limit for Meta Tags is, I believe, 250 words.

4.       For the competitor sites I would recommend - deconstruction. Well actually look at the source code (HTML) and try and find out what are the words that they are using, the names of the link for their pages, the structure of the site. This would help you in better constructing your own site.

5.       And, no, I do not believe that Google punishes you when you put your same article on other websites; but the thing to check is whether you have entered your site link so that other people can come back to you site and that would also double up as a back link.

6.       Another thing which you have not mentioned is whether or not you are using “Social Media Marketing/Social Media Optimization” techniques. In stating the obvious, use Facebook, Orkut, Twitter, RSS, Daily Email, OpenID, DISQUS, Yahoo! Site Explorer (Site Explorer allows you to explore all the web pages indexed by Yahoo! Search), YouTube, StumbleUpon, del.icio.us, MySpace, Flickr, Squidoo, Wikipedia (use with care as self-promotion is not allowed), Digg, Technorati, Reddit, ShareThis... and the list goes on and on and on forever, if you have not done so already.

7.       Make sure that the site is laid out properly (as I was not able to view the site, I can’t tell as of now) - proper structure, linking and proper links, images, less use of flash.

8.       I know I am burdening you with this, but if you find time to do so please go through this link TopRank BIGLIST of Online Marketing Blogs.

Sincere Regards,

Hi,

I guess you can say I am extremely frustrated.  My site is a few years old and all I have done are the white hat SEO techniques.  I have articles published, blog,  metatags, keywords, backlinks etc etc. Well I feel like I am always being penalized for something which I am unaware of.  I feel like I make it to the top 30 (not even expecting first page results) then all of a sudden I am no where to be found...like. Now I have done my research...some sites who make it to first and second page have a lot of back links, and many do not have as many as I have, no articles, blah blah blah.  I am beginning to think that seo is nonsense and basically you are picked and they either like you or they dont.  Or else I am sabotaged.  Thought that maybe I had too many keywords so I removed some and did some text over  still no results.  My site is nice, has good navigation, and nothing is wrong.  I see sites which shall remain nameless that have nothing...blah, no backlinks  etc and they are on the first page!  Is it who you you know at google or what you know????

Also, I see one competitor with 3-4 sites selling the same exact things with different address and different prices, but google loves them.  Even makes sure their products who up first in search results. C'mon, it is so obvious this person is spamming.......they have a zillion blogs, one page webistes with doorway pages etc.  But you know google loves them.

Very frustrated that honest folks are left behind.

Any suggestions?

Also, you have no choice but to pay for one way back links (aside of articles etc) which I refuse to do... Why spend  hundreds of dollars to find out you still didn't even make it to the top 20.

Yes I do have duplicate content with some of the same articles published on a few different article sites.  But why not, chances of anyone finding your articles on one site is like a needle  in a haystack.  You spend time on these articles so why not promote them? What is the difference when you find your articles on blogs taken by others.  That's the same as duplicate content.  Can't help that.
